SWITZERLAND

Those interested in domestic and childcare positions with a Swiss family should know the rules laid down by each Swiss Canton before a final decision is reached by the au pair.

  • Au Pairs must be female and between the ages of 17 to 30 years. (18 years in Geneva)

  • An au pair can stay in Switzerland for a minium of 12 months and a maximum of 18months.

  • The host family is required to enrol the au pair in a language school, and cover 50% of the fee expenses.

  • Attend a minimum of three hours of language classes in Zurich, four hours in Geneva.

  • You will receive board and accommodation with a host family in exchange for 30 hours of weekly work, plus babysitting once or twice a week.

  • You have the right to one day off per week (at least one Sunday in the month) and 4 weeks vacation per year (5 weeks if you are less than 20 years old).

  • On average the au pair can be paid at least SFR800 per month (this can be more or less depending on the Canton), from which compulsory deductions are made for tax and health insurance.

  • Citizens of the EU countries do not need a work permit, only a residence permit, to work as an au pair in Switzerland.  A residence permit is issued if the individual has an employment contract.  You can apply for a work permit in the usual manner on the Internet (www.geneve.ch) before entering the country, or by post to the Immigration Office.
