ITALY

  • Citizens of the EU/EEA do not need a visa to go to Italy.
  • Au Pair from outside the European  Union, a long stay visa is needed.
  • An au pair would need a certificate of enrolemnt (plus a receipt of payment) from an established Italian language school or college where he/she is taking the Italian language course.
  • This language school or college must be legally acknowledged ("legalmente riconosciuto")
  • The above mentioned certificate must be stamped by the local police.
  • The visa will be issued for the length of enrolement in school or college.
  • The au pair visa will be granted for study purposes only.
  • A contract detailing length of stay, weekly stipend, and language school arrangements is also required for the visa.
  • This contact must be stamped by the "Uffico Proviinciale del Lavoro" a permit issued by the local police..  Host Family should also provide a signed letter of support.
  • It is possible to apply independently through an Italian Agency, but first make sure you will not be liable to pay a hefty registration fee.
  • There are are many opportunities for au pairs during the summer holidays when most Italians who can afford au pairs migrate to the coast or the mountains and take their helpers with them.
  • The weekly pocket money for the au pairs is about average for Europe i.e. 60-65 euro for working 30 hours per week or 70-75 eur for a 36 hours per week.  Always check before you accept because rates do change from year to year
