2. Au Pair’s function with the family in the home
- The Au Pair is to share the life of the receiving family, while at the same time enjoy a certain degree of independence.
- Keep in mind there is always an adjustment time when engaging an Au Pair. Try to be patient and supportive, remember the Au Pair is in unfamiliar surroundings and with new people.
- Be very specific about the Au Pairs duties & schedules. (Make a list to avoid problems)
- Au Pairs are expected to baby-sit weekly, should never be asked to baby-sit on their free days.
- Childcare duties are defined by the parents, which may include, washing, dressing, prepare the children for school, prepare snacks, light meals, keep playroom & kitchen areas tidy & clean. Transportation to and from school. Homework. Take the children for walks. Swim, play & talk to the children.
- It is important to remember that the majority of Au Pairs do not have any formal childcare training, and are not in the same category as Nannies or Nursery Nurses.
- It is important that the Au Pair should be treated as part of your family, share the meals with the family, and be invited to share in their activity pursuits whenever possible.

7. Disreputable Impersonating Scam Artists acting on behalf of Au Pairs
Beware of the Impersonator or scam artist acting very deviously on behalf of the Au Pair, who will try to convince you they are the Au Pair’s former College Professor, Study Dean, Specialist Tutor, Travel Agent, Airline Agent, local clergyman, and above all the parents, saying they have been authorised by the Au Pair to act on their behalf and request monies from you on the Au Pair behalf.
Always verify the reference e-mail address you received from referees to make absolutely sure they originated from the employers mentioned. Check the country where the referee supposedly resides. Do not be fooled or conned.
Under no circumstances send cash money drafts or payments of any kind to any Au Pair or supposed Agent acting for an Au Pair from any part of the World.
8. Why should I include family photographs?
The majority of au pairs search for the family with the family album or at least one family photo. This is important to them because it gives them a picture of what you are like, and it also helps them to make upn their mind. If you have not uploaded your family photo then the au pair can not see you in their searches. It is now a proven fact that the more photos you upload, the more au pairs will contact you.
